In short our finding is that editing LATEX directly in the PDF view is possible for a wide range of edits and valuable for many major user groups and use cases hence it is a fair requirement for future top-of-the-line LATEX editors. We also provide a usability evaluation of the new system.

We identify these challenges and name workable solutions. Building such a system creates unique challenges compared to existing approaches. This allows the author to edit the document in its print form directly in a web-based PDF viewer. We argue that a true WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) approach is a justified requirement for future systems and we present here the first cloud-based true WYSIWYG editor. There have been several approaches that provide graphical editing support for LATEX. From that perspective, it is important to explore what are the best possible ways to support the author in efficiently editing documents. The text processing tool LATEX has prevailed as a standard in many fields of exact sciences it is evident that LATEX is likely to be here to stay. The preview-latex package (by the author) provides a much closer coupling by directly placing previews of small elements into the source buffer. 'Source specials' provide one way for fa-cilitating cross-navigation between source and pre-views. While the per-formance of those implementations by now leaves little to be desired, a demand for a tighter cou-pling of source and preview for editing purposes remains. A different range of tools does not aim to provide differences in editing, but fast and convenient access to the output results, mostly in the form of a separate page-oriented preview (Whizzy-T E X, Instant Preview). On the input manipulation side there are tools ranging from a token-based approach (Syntax Highlighting, X-Symbol) to complete editors using L A T E X mostly as a means of exporting documents (T E X macs, LyX).

A number of approaches trying to deal with this frequently perceived shortcoming will be illus-trated. The idiosyncratic T E X syntax does not lend itself readily to proofreading and sus-tained composition where the input syntax differs considerably from the produced results. While the command-driven approach of T E X/L A T E X has shown its power and flexibility for a variety of purposes, the lack of immediate visual feedback of-ten renders the authoring and reviewing process it-self somewhat inconvenient for both beginners and experienced users.
